The HSJC is a small not-for-profit shelter located in Jefferson, Wisconsin. We are not affiliated with the HSUS or ASPCA and do not receive funding from the county or any other government agency, but rely on donations to support our mission. On average, 1,000 or more dogs, cats and other small animals find sanctuary with us each year. We are committed to providing compassionate care, reuniting lost pets with their families and finding new homes for those who need a second chance. We maintain our high standards of animal care even while operating out of an increasingly inadequate and outdated facility. We invite you to learn more about our Capital Campaign to build a much needed new shelter here. On behalf of all the deserving pets who live happily ever after because of the HSJC, thank you for your support!

News & Upcoming Events

Abilene's Reward Fund

Abilene was the victim of cruel abuse when she was shot through the shoulder with an arrow. Her plight saddened not only the shelter's staff, but thousands of animal lovers who saw her story on our website and Facebook page. The response to our request for donations toward her care, and to the reward fund to help bring the perpetrator to justice, was immediate and overwhelming. Your contributions enabled us to provide Abilene with extensive medical care and offer a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of her abuser. We remain hopeful that someone can share some knowledge regarding the person or persons who committed this brutal act.

Abilene was reunited with her owner and is now recovering in the familiar surroundings of her own home. She is extraordinarily fortunate to have been reunited with her family, as only 3-4% of cats in shelters are ever reclaimed by their owners. Abilene's people learned the hard way that serious perils may await cats who are allowed outside, and after a lengthy conversation with our Executive Director, they have pledged to keep her safely inside.

Abilene's saga has helped to raise awareness for the many pets who suffer from cruelty, neglect or exceptional medical issues. Sadly, this will not be the last time an animal like her comes through our door. Please consider making a donation to our Animal Medical Fund so that we may continue to provide lifesaving care for injured and abused animals.

NO MOM LEFT BEHIND: half price adoption fees on all mother cats!

Kittens are usually the first to be adopted and we're very happy when they find good homes. Unfortunately, this "preference" for kittens means many wonderful adult cats are overlooked - including the mothers of all those adorable babies. That's why we created the NO MOM LEFT BEHIND program, with half price adoption fees on all mother cats. Some younger mothers are still practically kittens themselves, but all the moms do a great job of raising their families. We think a mom who was so devoted to her kittens is a mom who truly deserves to be loved. We hope you think so too, and that NO MOM LEFT BEHIND helps more mamas find new homes!

Paws & Pints

The event will be held Saturday, August 23rd, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at at Paddy Coughlin's Irish Pub, 14 Sherman Ave E in Fort Atkinson.

Are you considering adding a canine companion to your family or have you recently brought a new pooch home? The HSJC and Behavior Specialist Mittsy Voiles of the Lake Mills Veterinary Clinic will be offering a free workshop to help you decide if you are ready for a dog, where to look for a dog, how to choose the best dog for you, and what to do once you bring your new dog home. The workshop will be held on Saturday, November 15th from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm in the upstairs meeting room of the L.D. Fargo Library at 120 East Madison Street in Lake Mills. The number of participants in this easy "upcycling" program continues to grow and we want to thank everyone for "sticking to the list" and thoroughly cleaning all items. We are happy to report that after only about seven months of actively participating in this program, our shelter has earned slightly over $300! That's enough to cover the cost of three months of much-needed antibiotic eye ointment for our feline friends!

Animal Medical Fund

Animals often arrive at the HSJC in need of extra veterinary treatment due to illness or injury. Our Animal Medical Fund has been a real lifesaver for animals like Cooper, who suffered from a gunshot wound, or Chiquito, whose mouth was filled with painful, infected teeth. More recently we were able to provide extensive medical care to Abby, the loveable Saint Bernard who was surrendered to our shelter. Click here if you'd like to lend your assistance to those animals who need a little more help becoming healthy, happy and ready for adoption!

Help Homeless Pets Simply By Walking!

Earn money for the shelter with a free app for iphone/android users called Walk For a Dog. It uses your smartphone's GPS to track how far you walk and donates money for every mile to the shelter or rescue of your choice. Whether you're strolling alone or with your dog, please take advantage of this opportunity to help homeless pets!

The HSJC, in partnership with Fort HealthCare, knows that walking is really good for you (and your dog!). Check out DBR Designs online and support the shelter by shopping for great apparel items from our "If Your Dog is Overweight, YOU Are Not Getting Enough Exercise!" program.

To make walking your dog even more enjoyable, check out the Dog Pack, a fun and informal group that offers lots of opportunities to walk and socialize with other dog lovers. Your dog will love walking with new friends - and so will you!

Furry Friends 5k

Thank you to everyone who helped to make our first Furry Friends 5K a great success! We believe the huge turnout of participants and attendees shows support for the HSJC's efforts to provide for and serve our community's human and animal residents.

The FF5K began with an idea from young Nora Wichman and was supported by her amazing parents, Jake and Margo. It was funded by a multitude of business and individual sponsors, staffed by dedicated and talented volunteers, and enjoyed by 457 human participants, 150 dogs and an abundance of spectators. Everyone involved with or attending the race helped to create an atmosphere of fun, fur and fervor to raise money for the construction of the HSJC's new shelter.

It was an honor to witness the joy of those crossing the finish line for the first time, or those completing their first 5K with their canine companions. It was a truly inspiring day for young and old, two legged or four!

If you were unable to attend or would simply like to relive the fun, visit Marcus Novak Photography, enter "FurryFriends5K" in the Client Access field, and enjoy!

If you are interested in supporting Nora's initiative, it's not too late -- just send your contribution to the shelter with a notation that it is in support of the Furry Friends 5K.

If you'd like to make sure you don't miss out next year . . . SAVE THE DATE: Saturday, May 30, 2015, and watch our website for upcoming details!
